Recycled Friends, Inc. is small foster care program made up of fosters from the Louisville area and Southeast Ky. L. K. grew up in a small town in Letcher County. She graduated from Eastern Ky University and moved to Oldham County. She always had a passion to help the animals living in the mountains. L.K. began rescuing dogs when she was a child picking them up off the roads and finding animals dropped off at her parents country store. One weekend she went back home to take her child to visit and as they were driving up to Pine Mountain a dog was eating garbage on the side of the road. Her daughter began asking questions and getting upset. She asked " Why are all these dogs walking around with no homes?" "Why do people tie them out on chains and leave them outside?" L.K. decided that day to be honest and tell her family the stories of growing up with animal abuse all around her and that was the norm. She started researching animal rescues, shelters and clinics. She found out that there was only 1 shelter for 5 surrounding counties and it had a high euthanizing rate. She recruited Woodstock Animal Foundation to spend a weekend in Letcher County spaying/ neutering dogs. They now rotate between Harlan and Whitesburg on a monthly basis. They also help with transporting dogs and cats to Petsmart in Louisville so they get adopted. RFR hosted the United States Humane Society (RAV) program when they visited Letcher County and helped over 250 animals in a week.
L.K. met a volunteer named Bet at one of the clinics and their friendship was instant. They both grew up in a small town and shared common stories about animal abuse. That is when they decided to form the group called Recycled Friends Rescue. Bet still lives in Letcher County and is a Special Education Teacher. On the weekends she meets L.K. in Lexington and transports as many animals as she can get in her vehicle. The name Recycled Friends came about because they pick up dogs from the shelters, walking on the side of the roads and abandoned on top of mountains like they are trash. Together they have saved hundreds of dogs from being born to die and euthanized at the regional shelter. RFR rehabilitates, renews, and recycles pets back into forever loving homes. "One man's trash, is another man's best friend"
